LAS Academic Advising
LAS academic advisors, otherwise known as general advisors, are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to assist undergraduate student advisees on university and college degree requirements, general education requirements, and academic policies and procedures
(e.g., processing late drops). Students are welcome to meet with an LAS advisor as often as they would like. LAS advisors will make referrals to the appropriate advisors for specific major
and preprofessional advising
when necessary, as well as to other helpful and enriching campus resources.

Cohort Advising System
All students are assigned to an LAS academic advisor and will be a part of that advisor’s student cohort for the duration of their academic career at UIC – from Orientation to Graduation. Assigning students to a specific academic advisor at the very start of a student’s academic career facilitates a connection between the student and advisor, resulting in a relationship that allows advisors to assist their students as they pursue their academic goals, while also addressing the students’ emotional, cultural, personal, and developmental concerns and/or pursuits.
At this time, all students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences have specific LAS academic advisors assigned to them. If you would like to speak to someone about the possibility of changing your assigned LAS advisor, please email Katie Michel, Assistant Director for Cohort Advising in the LAS Academic Advising Center, at email@example.com
. In your email please include: your first and last name, UIN, LAS academic advisor’s name, and a brief explanation as to why you would like to change advisors.
Mandatory First-Year Advising (MFA)
All first-year students must make an appointment with their assigned LAS academic advisor in both the fall and spring terms of their first year in order to be able to register for classes for the next term. First-year students will be contacted via their UIC email with additional information about this requirement; however, students should feel free to make an LAS advising appointment at any point during their first two terms at UIC. Even though students are not required to see an advisor after their first year, LAS recommends that students see their LAS academic advisor at least once each term.
*For a directory of LAS academic advisors, visit the Student Academic Affairs Directory.
In an effort to help our students connect more quickly with their academic departments, or to provide support if they are truly undecided, all LAS sophomores (specifically, students who were new first-year students in Fall 2015) are required to participate in one of the following in order to register for the Spring 2017 term:
- Departmental Individual Advising appointment
- Departmental Group Advising
- Finding Your Fit in an LAS Major workshop
- General Individual Advising appointment (if pursuing a “Teaching of” degree or interested in an intercollege transfer out of LAS)
Students planning to graduate in the current or upcoming semester should meet with their cohort and departmental advisors to ensure all requirements are complete for graduation. The Graduation Checklist explains the steps students need to take.
