“If you don’t try it, you’ll never know if it’s meant to be. Before my internship classes, I never heard of Public Relations. Now, it’s something that I want to pursue.”

Fall ’15 English-Media, Rhetorical and Cultural Studies, Intern at Telemundo NBC

UIC College of Liberal Arts and Sciences first-generation college student – Dulce Hernandez – participated in volunteer and internship opportunities to figure out what career she was interested in. “I have many interests, and that has been a problem when trying to find a career. I like media, fashion and film. Previously, I was a Community and Education Programs intern at The Resurrection Project. I also interned for the fashion retailer BooHoo.com.”

Through LAS internship courses, Dulce reached out and networked. “If people don’t know who you are or what your interests are, they are not going to talk to you,” commented Dulce. “I was able to talk to many people who directed me to other people. An internship came up because my internship course had me interview a professional.”

From the informational interview, Dulce now interns at NBC Telemundo. “I am in Stations Relations, where I do both Public Relations and Marketing Sales. Since I am also interested in journalism, I am sometimes in the newsroom with the Talent and Publicity. I do public service announcement (PSA) rotations to choose the public service announcements. I do my research after watching the submissions because a lot of them are not true or misinformation. I also get to help the marketing director and sit in on the projects. There is always a campaign that they are working on, and I get to see how everything is planned and organized.”

“If you don’t try it, you’ll never know if it’s meant to be,” concluded Dulce. “Before my internship classes, I never heard of Public Relations. Now, it’s something that I want to pursue. All internship opportunities will teach you something that you didn’t know.”
