Preprofessional Studies

In addition to a major, students have the option to pursue preprofessional educational goals. Professional programs often require specific coursework to be completed prior to applying. Preprofessional educational goals are curricula designed for students who intend to pursue their undergraduate or graduate education at University of Illinois professional schools. Preprofessional educational goals are not majors in LAS. Students can often satisfy prerequisites for professional programs with general education and major requirements, and/or electives for an LAS degree. Most professional programs require a bachelor's degree prior to admission, and it is important that students maintain a high GPA each semester to be a competitive applicant.

Preprofessional advisors are available in the LAS Academic Advising Center to assist students in planning educational goal coursework and answer questions regarding professional program admission requirements and procedures. Students interested in a preprofessional field should declare an educational goal to ensure that they receive pertinent information applicable to their area of interest. To add a pre-health educational goal, students may visit the Pre-Health Advising website and select the Educational Goal link. To add an educational goal that is not pre-health, students should speak with an LAS academic advisor.

An LAS preprofessional curriculum does not guarantee admission to a professional school. A student who is not admitted to a professional school in advance of receiving an LAS degree may continue to work for a baccalaureate degree at UIC by meeting all graduation requirements of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Because application procedures, as well as deadlines, vary among the professional schools of the University of Illinois, students are encouraged to consult both an LAS preprofessional advisor and the individual professional program to which application is planned. Students who are members of groups defined as underrepresented in the health professions should also consult the Urban Health Program in the professional college of interest.
