Professor Roger Weissberg, UIC and LAS Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Education and Novo Foundation Endowed Chair in Social and Emotional Learning, was quoted in a July 2015 New York Times article about his work with the CASEL (Collaborative for Acadamic, Social, and Emotional Learning. LAS English Faculty Christina Pugh Named 2015 Guggenheim Fellow for Poetry

Poet Christina Pugh, UIC LAS professor of English, has been awarded the prestigious 2015 Guggenheim Fellowship in creative arts. As a Guggenheim fellow during the 2015-16 academic year, Pugh will work on a book-in-progress titled “Stardust Media,” a collection of reflective poems that follow a poetic speaker through encounters with various technologies – both ancient and contemporary.

The Answer Sheet,” a Washington Post blog, published a column by Gerald Graff, UIC professor of English and education, that responds to education historian and activist Diane Ravitch, who spoke to the Modern Language Association this month about the past, present and future of the Common Core State Standards. Also, a Chronicle of Higher Education column on graduate course offerings in humanities departments cites comments by Gerald Graff, which were delivered during his 2008 term as president of the Modern Language Association.

LAS is pleased to announce that Maria Hinojosa – award-winning news anchor and reporter – will be the College’s 2015 commencement speaker. In addition, Hinojosa will also receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. The ceremony will be held at the UIC Pavilion at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 10.
Assistant Professor of English Roger Reeves Receives Whiting Award for Poetry

UIC LAS Assistant Professor of English Roger Reeves is a recipient of the $50,000 Whiting Award. This prestigious award is given to ten emerging and talented fiction, nonfiction, poetry and drama writers annually. Of the Whiting Award honor, Reeves said it was "amazing and humbling." “It affirms, for me, that I must risk and risk and risk–not to get comfortable,” he said.

Four LAS Faculty Receive 2014 UIC Researcher of the Year Awards

Four LAS faculty members have been selected for 2014 UIC Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) awards. Wonhwa Cho was selected for a Distinguished Researcher award and Roger Reeves, Robert Klie, and Stewart Shankman were each selected for a Rising Star Award. These honors recognize the efforts and commitment of scholars who have demonstrated outstanding research and scholarly achievements to advance the knowledge in their field of expertise.
English Faculty Roger Reeves Named Finalist for 2015 Kate Tufts Discovery Award

Roger Reeves, an assistant professor of poetry in the English department, has been named one of five finalists for the 2015 Kate Tufts Discovery Award for his poetry book, King Me. The award is presented annually for a first book by a poet of genuine promise. Winners will be announced in late February.
