The Chicago Tribune Interviews Professor Barbara Risman on High-Profile Women Taking Short Maternity Leaves

Jun 18, 2018
The Chicago Tribune interviews Barbara Risman, UIC professor of sociology and LAS distinguished professor, in an article about high-profile women returning to work soon after having a baby. Risman addresses a number of issues including the messages, good and bad, that short maternity breaks send, and the societal impact of insufficient paid maternity- and paternity-leave policies. She cautioned against criticizing women who choose to take shorter leaves, because it plays into the stereotype that the mothers have to be the primary caregivers. “Unless we expect every father to take leave, we shouldn’t expect every mother should,” Risman told the Tribune.  https://trib.in/2kBNrvE (subscription required)
