Distinguished English Professor Luis Urrea Nominated for Prestigious PEN/Faulkner Award

Mar 11, 2016

Luis Urrea, Distinguished Professor in the Department of English and an instructor of creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry at UIC since 1999, is one of five finalists for the 2016 PEN/Faulkner award, the largest peer-juried prize given to American fiction writers. Urrea has been nominated for his 2015 short story collection “The Water Museum,” much of which centers around U.S.-Mexico border culture.

Writing for NPR, Michael Schaub calls Urrea’s work “compassionate but hard-edged, a kind of literary badass who still believes in love… ‘The Water Museum’ is a brilliant, powerful collection, and Luis Alberto Urrea is a master storyteller.”
